How pages are chosen
The tool first reads your robots.txt to find your sitemap addresses, including sitemap indexes that group several. Failing that, it tries sitemap.xml at the root. If no sitemap exists, it explores internal links from the homepage.
On a three-hundred-page site, forty evenly spread pages give a faithful picture of overall health: template issues, the ones affecting every page of a given type, necessarily show up in the sample.

Why we refuse simulation
Some tools display in one second an audit of "ten thousand pages". No server downloads ten thousand pages in a second: those figures are generated, not measured. A simulated audit reassures, then misleads, because it does not reflect your site.
Here, the displayed duration is the time actually spent downloading and analysing your pages. Forty pages usually take two to ten seconds depending on your server speed.
